Studying in Lampeter Welsh is the main medium of communication in this part of the world. Serious students of Welsh Studies at Lampeter consequently find themselves in the enviable position of being able to test and improve their knowledge of the vernacular in the best possible environment. There are opportunities to use the language every day in informal social situations outside the classroom.
Accommodation can be provided in a hall of residence where other students speak Welsh: clearly, there can be no better recipe for encouraging learning and building your confidence in the use of the language. Moreover, language teaching has undergone a revolution during the past decade. The advent of modern linguistic techniques has meant the abandonment of the traditional grammar-based language course; so, you will spend less time on memorising irrelevant data and more time on language practice and linguistic technique.
Teaching Methods Teaching is organised through lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Each student is allocated a tutor at the beginning of the session who advises on areas of study and assists with the choice of options. As well as work in language, you have the opportunity to study Welsh literature and history from its beginnings through to the present day and, in choosing from a wide range of options, you can also shape the terms of your own specialization in such diverse areas as the poetry of Dafydd ap Gwilym, Cynghanedd and strict metre poetry, medieval love lyrics, Arthurian literature in Wales, or modern Welsh drama , poetry and novels - among many others. The structure of the degree scheme is flexible, allowing for attractive options to be selected from almost every other degree scheme in the College. We are keen for our students to enjoy the facilities offered at Gregynog Hall (below), the University's residential centre in Powys, and we regularly arrange undergraduate courses there.
